Last night I sat down and watched the Silent Hill movie, which was visually very cool, but not so much with the dialogue. It had George Lucas syndrome, where people were saying Very Important Things in ways that no real people ever would; the lead actress just couldn't bring them off, though even a really good actress would have had trouble with it. And of course, the Creepy Child role had lines that were even more impossible. Though they did do a good job with her makeup. The school uniform, not so much, but good makeup.

I do question the efficiency of burning someone to death by tying them to a ladder and lowering them over the fire with dozens of ropes and pulleys. Not only does it seem like you'd have a problem when the ropes burned through and a burning corpse falls down on you from above, it just seems like an awful lot of extra effort. Alas, Cybil. You had the most realistic reaction of anyone who suddenly found themselves wandering through a creepy town populated by monsters and cultists.

Anyway, as I was clenching my legs together and trying not to whimper in terror at the barbed wire scenes, I was thinking about movie endings. And I was thinking about my favorite endings to movies, not because the endings are happy or everything works out or there's a shock twist, but because they just fit. There are a couple of movies that I wouldn't say work on the whole, but they have endings that leave me completely satisfied, if not always happy. Does that make sense? I think I'm phrasing it very badly. So I'll just write about the movies in question.

British pop groups, Army rangers, fairy tales, oceanographers, and cowboys )

I'm always on the lookout for movies I should be watching, so feel free to chime in here, folks.

I think tomorrow I'll try for more WsIP, or a music post. Or that picture meme. Or finally talk about AnimeBoston or Orlando.
